This is dedicated to Lt. Kim Smith at Riviera Beach Volunteer Fire company – well done! On December 3, 2019, Kim was driving her school bus route on General’s Hwy towards Annapolis when she heard a student saying, “She’s having a seizure”. There was nowhere for her to pull her bus over and she pulled as close as she could to the side of the road. Kim found one of her students face down, slouched over in her seat, seizing. Kim tried to lifting the student up to clear her airway but the student was twisted and wedged between the seats. She had another student assist with the lifting while having another student call 911 since the two way radio had no response. Kim followed safety procedures while prepping to help the student and was successful with clearing her airway. Kim and her students were able to get the seizing student into a position where Kim could keep the airway open until the Engine and Medics arrived. The student did regain consciousness and alertness and was then transported. The student is now doing well and the Mother was very complimentary to Kim as well as the Bus Service. One can only wonder if it had been a Bus Driver that was not trained to handle this situation. GREAT job Kim!
